I was today years old when I discovered that proper damper setting & drag factor are pretty important variables on the ERG! Was finding myself able to match stroke rate reasonably well while following select Dark Horse videos but falling short of the intended distances…by a lot! Brought the damper down today and what a difference! I also hadn’t appreciated how well the Concept2 is designed until this week, when I noticed that my rushing the slide on the ERG = reduced pace, just like on water!

This is something we often forget to discuss. A good way to compare to water experience is to think the higher the damper setting, the heavier your boat. So to row a dorrie, set the damper to 8 and up. To row a racing shell set at 3 to 5.
But not all machines are the same. The age and repair of the machine or the density in the air can affect drag factor.
I learned this weekend that at a higher elevations, I had to set the damper at 6 when in the mountains to get the resistance I am used to when set at 4 in my basement.
The erg wasn't broken after all!
