About the Event
Weekly rowing sessions would be offered to newcomers to help them learn the sport of rowing as well as assist them to integrate into Canadian culture and practice their English and French language skills. Each Wednesday from June 26 – Aug 28th, a new cohort of 8 participants will start the multi-session program. Over the course of the summer, we intend to introduce the sport of rowing to 72 participants in association with our community partners.
Week 1:
Learn to Row Session (2.5 hours) - John & Norma
- Tour of the newly renovated historic boathouse facilities (NCC River House)
- Equipment Overview
- Water and rowing safety overview
- Intro to the basics of the rowing stroke on Ergs
Environmental River Education Session + Swim (1 hour) - John & Norma
- The Ottawa Riverkeeper will provide an understanding of the Ottawa rivershed and ONEC members will provide the history of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club's role within that.
- Attendees will be encouraged to swim in the newly opened river pool if comfortable to do so. Trained lifeguards will be present in addition to the coaching team.
Week 2:
Learn to Row Session (2.5 hours) - Two volunteer SFA Coaches
- The second session will be provided on the Ottawa River in stable open water coxed quads and doubles.
- Rowers will be introduced to the importance of careful boat handling and taking care of their own bodies through warm-ups and stretching.
BBQ (2.5 hours) - John & Norma (additional SFA coaches welcome to attend)
- BBQ meal Includes : one of beef, chicken or veggie burger; drink (pop or water); summer sides (potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw and chips).
- An opportunity for program participants to socialize and discuss their rowing experience with one another and the coaching team.
- A ceremony to provide certificates of participation in the SFA rowing program.
