ONEC's tennis ladders are a great way to meet other members and partake in some friendly match play!
Doubles ladder
This is an "old school" ladder, using a pyramid tag board, which you'll see hanging in the Pavilion. The ladder will be open to all members paired up in any configuration – men's doubles, women's doubles or mixed doubles.
The objective is to move up the ladder - you can challenge teams up to three spaces in front of you (e.g., if your team is in slot 6, you can challenge the teams in slots 3, 4 or 5). Make the challenge by contacting the other team and then booking the court. If you receive a challenge, you must accept (unless there are scheduling issues). After your match, arrange the tags on the ladder board to reflect the results: If the challenger wins, the teams swap spots on the board (i.e., the challenger moves up and the other team drops down). More rules and directions are available in the Pavilion.
A sign-up sheet is posted at the Pavilion, so register your team today! We have space for as many as 20 teams. Please don’t sign up if you will be away for an extended time during the session period.
Singles ladder
All members (men, women, juniors) are welcome to participate in ONEC’s open singles ladder. It provides a fun opportunity to meet other players at your level and enjoy some friendly competition.
Members are welcome to register for any or all of our four ladder sessions throughout the season.
Our first session is wrapping up and the next session will get underway during the week of July 7! Registered participants will receive an e-mail with a link to the ladder divisions. Participants can also check out the divisions and log their results on the sheets posted at the Pavilion.
To sign up for the next session, submit the ladder form below.
Format:
Each player is placed in a “house” based on their estimated level of play, with up to 7 people in each house. Players can move between the different houses depending on the results of play.
Each session will last several weeks. In that time, participants are to play matches with every person in their house. We suggest reaching out to the others in your house to arrange matches as soon as possible.
If you don’t think you’ll be able to play your matches within the allotted time, we ask that you consider withdrawing for the session and returning for the next one.
Results (W or L) must be written on the sheet posted in the window at the pavilion.
At the end of each session, rankings within each house will be based on win-loss ratios. The top two in each house move up to the next house and the two people at the bottom move down to the house below. In the event of a tie, the ladder coordinator will determine which players should move up and down the ladder.
Match play:
Matches consist of a pro set (first to 8 games, win by two). If you’re tied at 7 all, play a tiebreaker with standard tennis rules.
Both players are asked to bring a can of new (or nearly new) balls for the match. After the match, the winner takes the unopened can and the loser takes the balls used during the match.
Before the match, we suggest that players confirm how you will decide the match if you’re tied and running out of time to finish the pro set (one option being to move to a tiebreaker).
The person receiving the ball is responsible for calling it in or out, based on the honour system. If you are uncertain, the rule of thumb is that you should make the call in your opponent’s favour.
