Dear members,
As another ONEC season fast approaches, I know that many of you are wondering what 2023 will bring on the waterfront and whether/when we will be returning to our beloved Boathouse.
I’m pleased to let you know that ONEC has reached an agreement in principle with the National Capital Commission (NCC) to lease, on a 5-year term, the west half of the ground-floor level of the Boathouse. We will be working to finalize and sign the legal documents comprising the lease the coming weeks.
Due to pending Transportation Canada and other approvals with respect to docks, as well as unfinished NCC work on the interior bathrooms in the Boathouse, ONEC will start its 2023 waterfront season in the same eastern temporary shoreline location that it has operated from in recent years. Approvals and completion of NCC work permitting, a mid-season move for sailing and paddling to the Boathouse will be considered, but is not yet confirmed. Rowing will remain on the shoreline for the full season as the decking underneath the Boathouse will unfortunately not be re-installed this season.
As we confirm logistics around member access to ONEC’s space in the Boathouse once the lease commences, we will follow up with further information. At this time, the NCC has not confirmed when the Boathouse (“River House”) will be officially open to the public.
The news of a lease for ONEC is exciting for many reasons. First, 2023 marks ONEC’s centennial in the Boathouse, and our 140th year of operations, and so it is historically and symbolically significant that we will return to the space this year. Second, in conjunction with the Boathouse lease, ONEC will also renew its tennis-side lease for the same term as the Boathouse. This gives us more certainty across our operations to conduct long-term business planning to ensure the financial and operational sustainability of the Club. Finally, the lease will bring us back to our home on the waterfront and let us do what we do best – offer inclusive, recreational watersports programming and day-camps to the Ottawa-Gatineau community!
At this important juncture, I’d like to thank the Board of Directors for its thoughtful guidance in helping us get to this point, as well as in particular Phil Hurcomb, Mike Hardstaff, and John Butterfield who, in joining me to comprise the ONEC negotiating team, have demonstrated an incredible commitment to advancing and protecting the best interests of the Club over the past few years in our discussions with the NCC.
I understand that between COVID-19, the transition from the Boathouse, and the uncertainty of what has seemed like a never-ending shoreline operation, the past few years have been difficult ones for our members – I want to also thank you for your patience and support as we have worked our way through these challenges. While there will undoubtedly continue to be some adjustments to our operations o the waterfront yet to come, we’re coming out on the other side and ONEC’s future looks very bright.

Alors qu'une nouvelle saison de l'ONEC approche à grands pas, je sais que beaucoup d'entre vous se demandent ce que 2023 apportera aux sports nautiques et si nous pourrons enfin réintégrer notre cher Boathouse.
Je suis ravie de vous annoncer, l'ONEC a reçu une offre acceptable avec la Commission de la capitale nationale (CCN) pour occuper la moitie du rez-de-chaussée ouest du Boathouse en location pour un terme de cinq ans. Nous travaillons pour finaliser et signer les documents légaux du bail, qui devrait entrer en vigueur le 1er mai.
En raison de l'attente des approbations de Transports Canada et d'autres organismes concernant les quais, ainsi que des travaux inachevés de la CCN sur les salles de bain intérieures du Boathouse, l'ONEC commencera sa saison 2023 des sports nautiques au même emplacement temporaire que l’an dernier soit sur la rive à l’est du Boathouse. Si les approbations et l'achèvement des travaux de la CCN le permettent, un déménagement des activités de voile et de canoë-kayak vers le Boathouse pourrait avoir lieu en milieu de saison mais rien n’est encore confirmé. L’équipement d’aviron pour sa part restera à l’emplacement temporaire pour toute la saison 2023 car la terrasse située sous le Boathouse ne sera malheureusement pas réinstallée avant l’an prochain.
Nous fournirons de plus amples informations dès la fin de nos discussions avec la CCN concernant la logistique d'accès des membres à l'espace de l'ONEC dans le Boathouse à partir du 1er mai. Pour l'instant, la CCN n'a pas confirmé quand le Boathouse (" River House ") sera officiellement ouvert au public.
La perspective de de la signature prochaine d'un bail est réjouissante pour l'ONEC à plus d'un titre. Tout d'abord, 2023 marques le centenaire de l'ONEC dans le Boathouse, et notre 140ieme anniversaire d’opération est historiquement et symboliquement important d’y retourner cette année. Deuxièmement, l'ONEC renouvellera également le bail des installations de tennis en même temps et pour la même durée que le bail du Boathouse. Cela nous permettra de planifier à long terme afin d'assurer la viabilité financière et opérationnelle du Club. Enfin, le retour au Boathouse nous permettra de faire ce que nous faisons de mieux soit d’offrir des programmes de sports nautiques et des camps de jour inclusifs et récréatifs à la communauté d'Ottawa-Gatineau !
À ce stade important, j'aimerais remercier le conseil d'administration pour les conseils judicieux qu'il nous a prodigués afin de nous aider à en arriver là, ainsi que Phil Hurcomb, Mike Hardstaff et John Butterfield qui, en se joignant à moi pour former l'équipe de négociation de l'ONEC, ont fait preuve d'un engagement incroyable pour promouvoir et protéger les meilleurs intérêts du Club au cours des dernières années dans le cadre de nos discussions avec la CCN.
Je comprends qu'entre la COVID-19, la transition du Boathouse et la situation des installations temporaires pour les sports nautiques qui a perdurée, les dernières années ont été éprouvantes pour nos membres. Je tiens donc à vous remercier pour votre patience et votre soutien pendant que nous nous efforcions à relever ces défis. Bien qu'il y ait sans aucun doute encore des ajustements à apporter à nos opérations sur la rive, nous sortons de l'autre côté et l'avenir de l'ONEC est très prometteur.
