Remember seeing bats at dusk, while enjoying the view from the Boathouse deck on BBQ nights? The renovations are disturbing them too! NCC biologists have installed 4 “bat boxes” on 3 poles along the river east of the Boathouse as alternative roosting sites—one of them near our rowing docks. As of early May, they had not observed bats roosting in them but are hopeful that, with time, they will be used. Since a bat can eat its own body weight in insects in a single night, we’ll have some natural mosquito control if they take up residence!
Information on efforts to support our declining bat populations is available at the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s website.
