A little closer to home, the Ottawa Rowing Club is hosting the annual Head of the Rideau head race on the Rideau River this Sunday, September 25.
Head Races are usually run in the fall and are longer than the summer regattas, which tend to be sprint races of 2000m. This year, for the first time, the staging area for the HotR will be on Mooney's Bay beach instead of at the Rideau Canoe Club. Boats will wetlaunch on the beach and head downriver to the start at Black's Rapids Locks for the 5km race (there is also a recreational distance which starts at the 3km point), then race back past the beach to the Canoe Club. The first wave will launch at 7:35 am and the races start at 8:35 a.m. There will be five races in total, finishing around 3pm.
ONEC has two entries this year: John Moore in the Masters Mens 1x event, race start 8:45 a.m. and John will team up with Christina Albers in the Mixed Open 2x at 2:10 p.m.
Come hang out at the beach and connect with the rowing community. Cheer on the rowers as they head into the final stretch, they always appreciate it. Maybe you will be racing next year?
