Volunteers Needed!

Hello Paddlers!

ONEC Rowing has a BIG event coming up: on Sunday, August 24, we’ll host the 20th Anniversary of the Canadian Sculling Marathon (CSM)! Rowers from Brazil, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, & Detroit will participate, along with 16 rowers from ONEC.

We still have openings for these critical volunteer roles:

Safety Boat driver (see role description below)

First Aid and/or Lifeguard certification holders; Medical & First Responder professionals can also fill this role (see role description below)

If you’re interested in helping out as described below, please indicate your interest in the comments below AND contact:

Norma Strachan - Head Rowing Coach

Safety Boat Driver - Specifics:

Role: drive one of ONEC’s motorized safety boats to your assigned post (you’ll have a spotter in the boat with you); drive boat to crews in need of rescue as needed, assist with rescue (hopefully unlikely; all marathoners will be rowing stable/open water touring boats)

Requirement(s): Valid PCOC license; assertiveness skills & diplomacy

Nice-to-have but not essential: First Aid training/experience; attendance at training prior to the event, date/time TBD (committed volunteers will be polled re: their availability for training)

Time commitment on August 24, 2025: 6.5 hr shift from 6:00am to 12:30pm OR one 3.5-3.25 hr shift (6:00am-9:30 am or 9:15am-12:30pm)

Incentives: CSM T-Shirt (brightly coloured for rowing/paddling/cycling!); dessert & drink at post-marathon BBQ; snacks & hydration provided during shift (but please bring your own H20 bottle if possible to reduce ONEC’s plastic use); FUN & CAMARADERIE! Get to know rowing!
